Colombian Lizards
Colombia is one of the most diverse countries since it holds 10% of the species in the world even though it comprises just 0.7% of the world territorial extension. Colombia is located in a privileged geographical position: Its territory is separated by three mountain chains which are the product of the Andes split. Colombia topography allowed the generation of multiple species since they were separated by at least 70 millions of years. Unfortunately, there are many ecological and natural history aspects that remain unknown for many species including reptiles. These photo galleries are a brief overlook of Colombia's magnificent reptile diversity.
Colombian Snakes
Ecological research is almost nonexistent for Colombian snakes species. Due to this lack of knowledge, conservation status is uncertain for many species. Colombian snakes face different threats such as deforestation, road kill, and collection for commercial purposes. However, one of the largest threats for Colombian snakes are ignorance and fear. People in rural communities usually encounter snakes during the course of their daily work. Approximately, a farmer can kill up to 3 snakes per day including venomous and nonvenomous species. Educating rural communities about snakes importance and recognition of venomous species can reduce the negative impacts on snake populations.
